Alcohol.org.nz magazine is published quarterly.

Looks at the issue of liquor licensing and whether local communities should have a say in the location and numbers of liquor outlets in their communities and how this might be achieved; there is an overview of the work of the Wellington City Council which has seen the city designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) Safe Community – the only capital city in the world to achieve such a status; looks at alcohol promotions and suggests the national protocol on such promotions should be updated; covers a new resource for parents of teenagers with drug and alcohol problems; covers a national youth forum Anamata hosted by ALAC and an interagency Pacific Fono focusing on Safety and Crime; looks at the Ministry of Health review of the Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Act 1996; and guest columnist Ross Bell from the Drug Foundations looks at drug and alcohol issues in prisons.

Marking the departure of Chief Executive Dr Mike MacAvoy after 12 years with ALAC, reviewing the 30 years ALAC has been encouraging moderation in the use of alcohol and the reduction of alcohol-related harm, notes the upcoming arrival of three new Council members beginning in 2007, and summarises some of the projects completed in 2006.

Covers the presentation on New Zealand's programme to change our risky drinking culture given by the Associate Minister of Health, Damien O'Connor, to the Australian Ministerial Council on Drug Strategy; a recent wananga in Gisborne with the region's kaumatua; preparations for the Fifth Healing Our Spirits conference.  Outlines AOD services for Pacific peoples in New Zealand; reviews the work of the Alcohol and Other Drug Helpline; presents new THINK resources developed specifically for community action groups; talks about the Maori Wardens Walk Through project and comments on teenage volunteers involved in Controlled Purchase Operations.


March 2005
