In late 2002, ALAC and a number of partners from the hospitality, retail and liquor industries agreed to work with ALAC on a programme to educate New Zealanders on what a standard drink is.

This followed the introduction in December 2002 of compulsory standard drinks information on alcoholic beverage labels.

While the concept of “standard drinks” has been around for some time, it has never been broadly communicated.

The objectives of the programme are that people are:
  • educated on the concept of a standard drink
  • informed on how they can understand their alcohol consumption
  • able to make a choice as to their level of consumption
The message is "know how much alcohol you are really drinking" and advises people to look at the label to know how many standard drinks there are in the container.

The brochure called Straight Up Guide (PDF 580) explains standard drinks in detail. This has been widely distributed.
