Where is most alcohol consumed?
According to the 2004 alcohol use survey, 92 percent of those who consumed alcohol in the last 12 months drank at least once in their home while 84.8 percent drank at least once in someone else’s home. Other locations where alcohol was consumed at least once over the 12 month period were:
restaurants/cafes/coffee shops (71 percent)
pubs/hotels/taverns (60 percent)
special events (such as festivals, music events, dance parties – 35 percent)
workplaces (32 percent)
outdoor public places (such as beaches and parks – 28 percent)
nightclubs (24 percent)
sports events, races or boating (25 percent)
sports clubs and other clubs/groups meetings (21 percent)
private motor vehicles (almost 9 percent)
plane trips within New Zealand and theatres/movies (6 percent respectively)
marae (almost 3 percent).
The 2004 alcohol use survey also found that an individual’s own home is the most common place for drinkers to consume large amounts of alcohol (47.2 percent) followed by someone else’s home (41.5 percent). Only 16.4 percent of drinkers had consumed large amounts of alcohol at pubs, hotels and/or taverns. Among drinkers who had consumed large amounts of alcohol at least once in the last 12 months:
young people aged 12-17 years were more likely than all other age groups to have consumed large amounts of alcohol at someone else’s house
young people aged 18-24 years were more likely than all other age groups to have consumed large amounts of alcohol in nightclubs
people aged 18-34 years were more likely than other age groups and males were more likely than females to have consumed large amounts of alcohol at pubs, hotels and/or taverns
males were more likely than females to consume large amounts of alcohol at sports clubs and workplaces
non-Mäori were significantly more likely than Mäori to have consumed large amounts of alcohol in someone else’s home and in restaurants, cafes and coffee shops
Mäori were more likely than non-Mäori to have consumed large amounts of alcohol in sports clubs and other clubs.
