Alcohol is both a popular drink and a powerful drug. Because it is so common we forget that it should be treated carefully. It is one of the most commonly used drugs in Aotearoa New Zealand and we frequently under-estimate its affect on us and our whānau.

Drinking alcohol is a choice we make. Manaaki Tangata is about choosing to care for people in how we drink and in how we serve alcohol. One person misusing alcohol means others are caught up in the consequences.

The challenge is for us to keep the whole whānau safe when alcohol is around.

We encourage use of these guidelines (PDF 1.3MB) in schools as part of the health curriculum. Teachers may be interested in using the section on developing an alcohol policy as a learning project for students.
