What We Do

ALAC works with New Zealanders to change our drinking patterns. We work with individuals and organisations, demonstrating that intoxication is not the desirable or normal end point of drinking. We aim to change our social acceptance of drinking to get drunk.

We work to create an environment for people with problematic drinking habits to seek and receive help sooner.

We promote host responsibility, with a stronger focus on management of alcohol at events.
Information and research are important, especially in developing ways of measuring change. We will keep asking: Are things getting better or worse?

We need the right balance in our laws. ALAC promotes change in the regulatory environment. We articulate the policy positions of our Council in submissions to Parliament and local government on the Sale of Liquor Act. We assist interested groups in getting their voices heard by Government. We also influence change in the non-regulatory environment, as this is critical.

ALAC will continue to lead a national conversation about our drinking culture. Supporting communities who want to develop local solutions, in particular those with a focus on Māori, Pacific peoples and young people, will be a key part of this.

Underpinning all of this is our ongoing commitment to work together with our partners including industry and law enforcement. With our colleagues in the health sector, we want to increase the understanding of health harm and law and order impacts of alcohol misuse.
