Crime and Assault

Alcohol features in many statistics around crime, assault and sexual assault in New Zealand and overseas and alcohol has been shown to impair judgment and increase aggression in some people.[34]

The New Zealand Police estimated that at least 31 percent of all recorded offences committed in 2007/08 involved an offender who had drunk alcohol beforehand.

One in five sexual offences involved a perpetrator who had consumed alcohol before the offence, but this is likely to be a significant underestimate.

Half of homicides recorded between 1999 and 2008 involved a suspect or victim who had been drinking alcohol at the time.[81]

Based on a survey of the population, half of sexual and physical assaults are perpetrated by those who are under the influence of alcohol.[82]
