Māori

Prior to colonisation, Māori did not have a history of making or using alcohol. In current times, Māori experience disproportionate alcohol-related harm compared with non-Māori. Māori are more likely to die from alcohol-related causes, be assaulted by someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs and be detained by police for an alcohol-related offence than non-Māori.[81] There are also differences in drinking patterns, with Māori being significantly more likely than non-Māori to have first tried alcohol, and a large amount of alcohol, at age 14 or younger, and frequently whānau drink a large amount of alcohol at a single session.[83]
