Pacific Peoples

Pacific peoples in New Zealand are from many Pacific nations, with diverse cultural norms, customs, languages, values and lifestyles. There are also differences in between those Pacific peoples born in the Pacific Islands and those born in New Zealand. Similarly, there are differences in alcohol use and views of alcohol.[86]

Overall, Pacific peoples in New Zealand are much less likely to have consumed alcohol than other people. However, over the last decade there has been a significant increase in the number of Pacific people who drink alcohol. Pacific men are more likely to drink alcohol than Pacific women and are more likely than other men to have frequently drunk a large amount of alcohol at a single session in the last year. They are also more likely than other men to have experienced harmful effects on their friendships or social life, or on their home life due to alcohol use.[83]
