Sports People

Alcohol is commonly used as a social drink among sports people and athletes and is linked to sport through sponsorship and advertising.

Some sports people also use alcohol to increase confidence, relieve stress and decrease sensitivity to pain. However, alcohol does not improve sporting performance or muscle function and may have detrimental effects, even at moderate doses, on overall performance and on balance, hand-eye coordination and accuracy.

Drinking alcohol after exercise, especially highly concentrated alcoholic beverages, is not as useful for rehydration as drinking other fluids containing carbohydrates and sodium to replace fluid and salts lost through sweat.

Alcohol may also hinder recovery from strains and sprains and should be avoided for at least 24 hours after an injury.[85]
