Adult

FASD

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
Consuming alcohol while pregnant may cause significant abnormalities in the unborn, developing baby (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder). Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, who were exposed to alcohol while in the womb, can have a range of problems including poor growth/small size, facial abnormalities, heart defects, brain damage, developmental delay and social, emotional, behavioural and mental deficits.

Binge drinker

An adult18 years and over (25 years or more) who has consumed seven or more drinks on the last occasion they drank alcohol. For a young person (18-24 years)this level is five or more drinks on the last occasion they drank.

Binge drinking occasion

ALAC uses a threshold equivalent to seven standard drinks consumed in one drinking session as an indication of a binge drinking occasion for an adult18 years and over. For young people (18-24) it is five or more standard drinks.

Moderate drinker

An adult18 years and over moderate drinkerAn adult moderate drinker is a person 25 years or more, who currently drinks alcohol, but did NOT consume seven or more standard drinks on their last drinking occasion. Non-drinker

RTD

‘Ready to drink’ alcohol drinks, combining a spirit with a carbonated soft drink.

Segmentation

Both adults and minors/youth12-24 years of age. are grouped into one of three ‘segments’ based on whether they currently drink, and whether they are a ‘moderate’ or ‘binge’ drinkerA drinker is a person who self-reports they currently consume alcohol. (as defined above)

Standard drink

A drink containing 10 grams of alcohol.

Statistically significant

Survey results, including comparisons between surveys, have been tested for their significance at the 95 percent confidence level, meaning that this is how confident we can be that the results are not due to chance.

Supervised Drinkers

Young people 12-17, who drink only a few times a year at home and mainly with their parents/whānau.

Youth

12-24 years of age.
