The Law for Over 18s

On 1 December 1999, the alcohol purchasing age in New Zealand became 18.

This means anyone who is aged 18 years or over and shows approved ID can go into licensed premises, and buy and drink alcohol.

Licensed premises include hotels, pubs, restaurants, clubs, bottle stores, supermarkets, cafes and nightclubs. They are expected to act according to the rules for licensed premises.
